Wisconsin Moves to Advance Health Equity and Address Social Determinants of Health

The State of Wisconsin moved its health equity efforts forward with the release of a report by the Governor’s Health Equity Council providing recommendations focused on enhancing the state’s overall health outcomes with a concentration of addressing disparities in health among traditionally marginalized and underrepresented populations characterized by, among other factors, their income, race, ethnicity and other social determinants of health.

The Council’s report provides twenty recommendations based on a broad range of data underscoring the extent of health disparities and inequities in Wisconsin and providing both policy and execution roadmaps to improve health equity.

From a policy standpoint, the recommendations focus on changes that would manifest across health services, community engagement, housing, education, fiscal policy, governance and justice. Importantly, in order to best measure and track the success of implementation, the report also details the importance of utilizing interagency partnerships that would leverage and enhance health data tracking infrastructure.
