Gates Foundation, Wellcome and Novo Nordisk Partner to Fast-Track Health Equity Research

The global health equity space just received a major boost from the joint partnership among the Gates Foundation, Wellcome and Novo Nordisk Foundation, which will fund research focused on solving global health challenges, particularly those suffered by the world’s most vulnerable populations.

Under the terms of the partnership, each of the three entities have committed $100 million to support the three-year initiative, with the funding earmarked to enhance health equity across a broad range of disciplines, including infectious disease, nutrition, immunity and antimicrobial resistance. With the size and scale that comes with the $300 million in funding, this health equity research partnership has the strong potential to achieve successes that would not otherwise be possible.

Among the elements of the partnership that health equity advocates are most excited is that the research will be associated with community-based problems. More specifically, historically underrepresented and marginalized communities often experience health disparities that are unique to their localities. By targeting research efforts that seek to solve the localized disparities impacting the health of communities, this research alliance is poised for robust impact in the years to come.
