Global healthcare powerhouse Abbott today unveiled a range of new health equity programs as part of its multi-million dollar Diversity in Clinical Trials initiative to boost diversity and improve healthcare within historically under-represented populations. The programs build upon the scholarships, partnerships and focus on diversified participants that marked the initiative’s first year.
The new programs include partnering with the Norton Healthcare Foundation to create sustainable clinical research models, establishing a training program for clinical research coordinators from diverse backgrounds, and setting up a new office called “Diversity in Research” that is dedicated to promoting diverse participation in clinical trials.
The programs aim to break down barriers to clinical trial access for historically under-represented communities to improve health equity. Abbott said the initiative would assist community-based clinics to create clinical trial research centers of excellence and provide grants to support research coordinators and data managers.
In addition, Abbott also is providing education to support the training of new clinical research coordinators from diverse backgrounds who will work specifically with under-represented communities.
