The World Health Organization (WHO) just marked its 75th anniversary and, in doing so, called for renewed efforts globally to achieve heightened levels of health equity.
WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned that unequal access to healthcare, significant deficiencies in global preparations for health emergencies, and hazards caused by harmful health products all are challenges that persist.
He urged governments, NGOs, corporations and leaders across the globe to safeguard and provide financial resources for healthcare and medical professionals who are leading the response to enhancing health equity for historically marginalized and underrepresented populations.
WHO is also urging countries to prioritize primary health care as the foundation of universal health coverage.
The organization has invested in science and digital health in recent years and is prepared to assist nations in their discussions regarding a pandemic agreement, updating the International Health Regulations, and implementing other measures to not only be best prepared for potential future pandemics, but also to drive greater health equity outcomes in the months and years ahead.
